Consider universally changing Tutor
We acknowledge that different sites across the network use varying terms to describe the Tutor role, and we recognise that the word Tutor can sometimes cause confusion for families about who it is that is directly teaching their child. Terminology currently in use includes Tutor, Mentor, Home Visitor, and Parent Coach. Given this diversity, any move towards a universally accepted change would require significant time, consultation, and updates to documentation.
At this stage, a shift in language at the national level must be informed by a thorough understanding of local practice and careful consideration of the implications such a change would bring. To support this process, we have invited sites to share their local language preferences through the Our HIPPY, Our Community form. This will help us understand better:
- terminology that is most used
- why that language resonates within local communities, and
- how families respond to different terms.
The insights gathered will enable us to tailor communication and resources to more closely reflect the language used in your community, wherever possible. For now, there is no plan to formally change the use of Tutor, and National Office communications will continue to use this term. In the meantime, HIPPY Australia has no objection to sites using language or terminology that best fits the role of the Tutor in your community.
